In my work I use humour and imagery to quietly subvert. Taking my inspiration from urban environments, I work mainly with elements of images taken from impermanent situations that I come across on a daily basis. I am currently obsessed with discarded and found objects, which I am using in place of the human figure. They have an ability to appear both humorous and vulnerable when taken from their normal environments and ejected into the outside world. However, underneath the surface is a not so flattering reflection of society. To produce my work I use a number of different techniques including line drawing, painting and stenciling. I enjoy using blocks of clashing colour and eye popping pattern. I make no attempt to cover up the variations that are left behind by paint that leaks through my pattern stencils. Resulting in an illusion where, from a distance, the work looks more like an advertisement or glossy magazine graphic but up close the variations show up the imperfections. Making a direct reference to a commentary on society and also a nod to the hand of the artist. Most recently I have been using text in my work. I find myself drawn to phrases born out of popular culture, media, music and poetry which have become part of our everyday vocabulary and reference system. I have also collected interesting overheard snippets of conversations, while on the trains, buses, in cafes or wondering the streets. I find that when images of the objects and the text are forced together the two previously unrelated subjects begin to communicate in very interesting ways. The end products are a combination of some of my favourite things big bold colour, pattern, line drawing, discarded appliances and interesting phrases. Evocative of an urban and pop art tradition which I am very much inspired by. |
